Questions with A Twist

When I usually receive questions fromstudents most of the time the questions focus on my physical limitations. This group of O.T.student were coming from a mental health point of view.

1.Doyou feel someone who does not know you or your story overlooks/stereotypes whatis genuinely there? What is going on in your head when this happens?

When I am out in public, all of my accomplishments and successes aremeaningless. If people are not aware of how I am, they still see my disabilityfirst and not me as a person. They stilltalk loud and slow as if I am mentally challenged. It depends on the situation,most of the time I just want to get away from situation and go on with my life. I am thinking they have not been educated anddon’t know the wiser.

Then there is the disrespectful situation and I just go into a rage andmake a total scene. When I do this, Imay only make them right. But at least they feel my wrath, when I yell nobodycan understand me. I end up biting mytongue, or lip and bleed. I realize that I end up looking like a total mentalcase in their eyes, but al least they know how I feel about their ignorance.

2. 2.Currently,there has been debate in the special needs community about the concept of"labels" for the primary reason to purposefully address whothe person is not what the person is. For example you would neveraddress a child with autism as an “autistic child”. Even with your success, howdo you feel about the label of "cerebral palsy" being attached toyou? Do you accept it as part of your identity or do you see yourself or labelyourself as "Dan the artist"?

I think I am the wrong person to ask about the using labels, orbeing PC. I mean I call myself gimp, noteveryone is thrilled about that. Some people think it is wrong, other peoplefeel like it tribal and strong.

I embrace my CP, I even conceder it as part of my personality. CP really makes me who I am. How else do I introduce myself, I’m Dan and Ihave C.P. why be a shame of it. Professionally I’m “Dan the artist”

3. 3.Dan,do you think art keeps you mentally healthy? How? Can you give us some examplesplease?

Yes, if you look back at my art over the years you can see the upsand downs in my life by the colors I use and the subject matter I choose. Art gives everyone the tool the to express theinner self the may scare people, or they do not know how express what they feelwith words. I am sure I express thingsin my art would worry people if I but said it in words.

4. 4.Dan,we all are interdependent with someone in our lives no matter our backgroundsor abilities. Even as an artist, there is some sense of interdependency throughcollaboration. In your situation, how important physically and mentally is thisconcept of "interdependency" and support throughout your daily life?

Without help nobody can be in-depended I might get a little more thenmost people, but we all are depended on someone. When people look at my art, they just see thework I do. The do not think about theassistance that I get in my studio. My help mix the paint, cut the canvas, evenput out drink, or gives me a snack to keep me going. The assistances even stay longer than whatthey get pay for. To the out sider, it would seem that I am the only one benefitingfrom this arrangement. My assistancessee how determined I am to do my art and I would like to think they carry thatdetermination over into their own life.

5. 5.Dan,as future occupational therapists our job is to modify tools and theenvironment in order for individuals to enjoy activities that are meaningful tothem. What was going in your mind when you first had the chance to really diveinto your passion?

This is what I want to do with my life. I did not care that it did not pay much, orif I did not achieved fame until I died. It was important that I get to express how I feel about my world. I think if every finds their passion in life,the world, as a whole would benefit.

6. 6.As futureOTs', from your experience and condition, what is some advice you could give usin order for us to more efficiently assist individuals physically and mentallywith CP?

I hope you don’t think this is cheating, but I wrote this last yearand think it relates to this question.

2012 House Projects

We are working on some new projects for the house. The firstone I might have already mention, acurved staitlift from first to second floor. We are trying to get that fundedthrough the DDA.

Second project has to do with toilet hygiene, of courseeveryone has a bit of trouble in that area. With the help with our friends at www.accessiblehousingservices.com we came up with the solution of the Bide'ttoilet seat. Shara is the O.T. that workwith Accessible Housing Service, she only put one other seat in for aClient. She said this seat is popular inEurope, but mostly for the upper class.

The Problem with the Bide't toilet seat is the controls arelocated on the side of the seat. if Iuse the remote, I still would be in theright position for the seat to work efficiently. I contacted V-LINC to see ifthey will help redesign the controls. They notified me today that they will take on the project.

Christmas 2011

I had a very good and humorous Christmas: Brooke gave me somehad blown straws that are wider to drink soup with. Now it gets funny, Wifey gives me her gift,with my first rip. I tare the corner of the paper and see an image of a babystroller. Wifey said my face started toask a hundred questions. Her gift was acup holder to put onto my chair. Then I open Michael’s gift, the shirt is afunny on facebook. It says “your face” 3 million dislikes. This is the most Iever laughed opening my gifts.

How Long Does Plastic Really Stick Around?

Swallowing plastic is a weird sensation, when one does nothave use of both hands other devices are used to open plastic and chipbags. I have tried using the popping method;you push the air to one end until the bag pops open. You end up with a bigmess, the contain flies out and most of it is crush. On occasions both ends pop open, so you justhave a food tunnel and keep eating until the chips stop falling out.

I end up using the hand and mouth method, the only problemis that sometimes pieces of bags get stuck in my teeth. It may take hours towork this little piece of plastic out with my tongue and/or by toothbrush. By thetime I do get the plastic dislodge, it is to far back and end up swallowing it.I can feel the invader go half way down as it hits the side of my throat. I usuallytake a long drink to make sure it gets all way down.

15 Lives Later Follw Up

Brooke and I got off to a late start on Friday, plus thetraffic was insane. If there was not roadwork,it was an accident. So we got to Kennedy Krieger institute an hour late. From the start, we were working against theclock since Brooke had to work that night. While we were waiting a Spanish mother comes in with her two boys.

The older boy was about 5 and kept looking at me like whatthe... At first I had my back to thefamily and Brooke was enjoy the faces that the boy was making. I turned around and put my hand out so hecould give me five.

We finally went back with Susan to start working on the newhead sticks. Time starts flying by andonly one head stick is partly done. Brooke and I start thinking of alternative plans. Maybe I could stay andWifey picks me up later.

We told Susan of our dilemma, it so happen that her daughterwas in a holiday program by our house. Susan offered to drop the head sticks by our house after theprogram. I went a head and road to workwith Brooke and Wifey picked me up from there.

Sure enough Susan comes by our house at 11:30 and it fit assoon as I put the head stick on!!!!

15 Lives Later

Tomorrow I am going to get new head sticks, the last I gotnew one was in ’05, or ’06. I also waituntil they are totally trashed and held together with tape plus cardboard. Thisdrives Brooke and Wifey crazy. It islike turning in your car for a new one. The less you get for trade in, the more of a badge of honor it is.

When I do get new head stick, there is a breaking period. Aswhen people need to use their favorite pen. This is the first time both of my head sticks broke, or fell at the sametime. That is why part of it is purple,Brooke and I took two head sticks and made one. Glue would not hold alone, so we added the plastic ties too.

It we kept adding plastic ties; I could look like those guysfrom High Lander 2. The 2 guys with the porcupinehair on the flying “skateboards”. As always Camden has to check out everything Ido.

The STEP Program is a program for someone no longerin the school system and is between 18 and 20,wants to work and is DD eligiblethrough DDA. Their focus is on jobs. I think this is the same story about the documentary at Sundance. It is a taboo subject, but needs to be addressed. The clip I saw was with a client in an Iron log. Sex i s something that should be something everyone should experience.

Wow President Obama issued a statement proposing better labor standardsfor in-home care workers. I always thought if care providers got better pay andwere paid on time it would be a win, win for all. The care provider could havea better income and the would give a higher quality of care. The over timeparty may be hard to make happen since that would be hard to write into ayearly budget.

Plus it is a job market that will not disappear, most likelyit just keep growing. DAH!

If you live in Maryland, DDA offers one time only funding for home modifications up to $17,000. The home modification should be one that will make your home more accessible and should relate to your disability. You can address it to DDA Central Maryland Regional Office, 1401 Severn Street, Baltimore, MD 21230. I would suggest that you work on this with your service coordinator, once all of you sign the application. A service funding plan would need to be completed by will need to be done by your direct support service.

For a few weeksnow I have been seeing Verizon commercials for home monitoring, this is targetfor people that are always on the go. I thinkthis would also be going for disabled, by smart phone, or computer one cancontrol: locks, light, temperature, and camera. Of course the states it is only $9.99 amonth, what about getting this setup? TheVerizon start up kit runs from $69.99 to $219.99 that is one light controlunit. Then there is the cost ofinstalling all of these items.

Forget Laws, Be Human

On Saturday morning Wifey and I were on our way out to run some ernes. Mike was on his way out to walk Camden, Mike is wifey’s ex-husband that we share the house with. His name is on the house; he really does not act like a landlord.

Mike goes on to tell Wifey the neighbor emailed to complain again about the noise I make when I move around our house. This time the bitch was that I took a shower too early when we left for California. The other thing is packing up to early on Sundays to go tailgating, other gigs. In other words he wants me to be consider and not start my day until 9 A.M.

The neighbor has been complaining about me for 2 years now and has never talk to me. I was sitting in the car with the door open and legs out. Wifey brings the neighbor over to talk. I started out by stating Mike is not my Father and you do not pay my bills. If you have a problem talk to me, not Mike, or Wifey, which just pissed him off. As I went on he got more piss off because he had to take time to listen to me while wife translated. I am so pissed off/frustrated that I bit my tongue and bleeding.

The whole time he was hiding being the car door never making I eye contact with me, as if I am below him. He is just a bully and I am the gimp that is going take him down. When we first moved in, we explain my disability and my work is as an artist and public speaker. We also said I will be using my Special Needs Trust to help make the house more accessible. He said maybe he could help with the trust to make it work for me.

Saturday I asked how can you work with the disabled when you cannot understand them as people? The whole he said he just wanted more consideration and that means living by his rules. I told him if he thinks I’m doing wrong, just call the cops next time. He replied I do not want go that far. If you think I am doing wrong back it up.

This is the same guy that wanted us to put off the work on the bathroom to make it more accessible, because he showing his house. Another example of how he thinks his life is more important then others.

Wifey and I got back home and everyone was out side. The neighbor plus wife, Mike and us, I am sitting in the same position in the car. Once again they are talking about more consideration. Like taking showers the night before, WHAT THE FUCK!!!!! I jump on down on the grown and slammed car door.

The wife says you do slam the door close and the pictures on their wall shake. If they want more consideration, they can pay for an O.T. to evaluated me and pay for any commendations they suggest.

They just want more consideration and want us to be friends. Now the husband is calling my name and trying buddy up to me. I repeat it is too late, next call the cops if you think I am doing wrong. Back up what you believe in! I crawled over to my chair, got in it and came into our house.

Our neighbors' actions are not about breaking ADA laws, or discrimination it’s about being human.

We used to have a cat named BooBoo, when I would be sittingwith my right hand by my side she would walk through it from head to tail. Mywrite hand is my bad one, so it has a mind of it’s own and the CP grab isworse.

Thank you for wonderful trip, just why did it take so longto do this. It was not our usual vacation, but I knew what I was getting into.This was a trip about introducing your family and friends to the man you wantto spend the rest of your life with.

We had a lot of laughs with everyone from your hometown. Iam still confused about witch town you are really from. We stopped back by wifey friend’s Ed house; on the way to theairport, she told Ed it was on my bucket list to ride a bike. He was more then happy to make that happen,the whole time heading to his family’s I’m thinking how are we going to keep myass on it.

Wifey and I pull up to their house and the bike is sittingthere waiting. Wifey is having secondthoughts, but honey it was your idea. So we go into the house to visit for awhile, then the time comes. It was a bit hard getting me on the bike. Once Igot in a position and good hold of Ed, I was amazingly still. Maybe I was so focus on hold to Ed that Iforgot that I am spastic CP. The other odd thing was that I was holding on so tightthat my arms and legs hurt, but the rest of my body was relaxed.

Sure it just around the block, but to me it like that rideto Vegas. Thank you Ed!!!!

A Very Bi-Pallor Day

Sunday was 9/11, but it was also the Ravens season opener.
Michael, Wifey and I took Fizz Caps tailgating, of course we got a later start thenwe wanted. The whole day turned out to be a day of timing.

By the time we were turning off of 83 in Baltimore it was9:02, if we were not stopped the light. We would not have heard the bellchiming all around the city. If wasfitting that the day started out with over cast skies to make you reflect onthe events of tens years ago.

Last year when we took Fizz Caps tailgating we kept going tothe same lot, it was out of the way. So we decided to drive around and checkout other parking options. Although, it was exciting seeing the sea of purpleyou still reflect on what this day is really about, coming together as anation. We were drive down one street andsee a lot of people waving for parking spaces.

We find the perfect spot between two houses, paid $30 forthe space and $10 to set up our tent. Assoon as we popped our tent, another guy comes saying this is his space and willhave all these cars towed. The first guywe paid was a squatter, so after working things out with the owner. We couldstay, but would have paid another $40. Talk about a pre-game!

The wife of the couple that ran the parking across thestreet notice our situation and said they still had spaces and could setup ourbooth. They both knew who we were, thehusband works for Social Sec. as a photographer and heard wifey and I speak ata luncheon and shared our store with his wife. Thanks Raven Roost 50 forletting us crash your party and the lot was really rocking.

Even through we were not close to the stadium, we were inthe path of the jet fly over. I had thechill and goose bumps at the same time, if possible?

As we hit 695 on the way to Michael’s, we rode with a groupof bikers, riding for 9/11. As we drove close to the Dulaney Valley Bridge,there was a flag hanging from two fire trunks. The tears just began to flow.

August CCMS Conference in Des Moines

Once again I want to thank Jackie the committee for inviting Dena and I back to Iowa for the 2011 CCMS Conference. This was a nice size conference, not to big that you are not over whelmed by topics, but diverse enough to peek everyone’s interests. I still love the idea of presenting last. By that time I have a good vibe for the group and can gear my talk towards their goals.

I asked Jackie if this was our audition for hosting the Oscars. Since we did two back to back sessions for 1 and a ½ hours each, it was a challenge not to repeat our selves, but think Dena and I did a good job.

After the presentations, a mother of an autistic child come up to me and said thank you for explain your choice not using an ACC device. She said they tried using a device for communication, the mother notice that her child stopped communicating when not speaking for their selves. So they ditched the device, I always say parents know best for their children.

Sometimes The Crown Grow Thorns

Tuesday we went with our friend to meet with his service coordinator to express how he and we felt about the support he has been getting. The whole day our friend complained how his stomach hurt and wanted to go head to the ER.

Before we went, we called the support broker and nurse, they both said this is not an emergency and do not go to the ER. It is just how our friend is looking for attention.

When we got to the ER our friend had wounds on his stomach that were filled with yellow puss. The doctor gave him a top shelf IV anti-biotic and more to take for week.

Friday we receive an email from his support broke saying they will be filing a complaint against Dena and me for being a bad influence on his life. In addition they are taking legal action for stealing confidential information. Everyone at this agency has a superior complex, no body is always right.

Yes, I did not sleep Friday night not because I was scare, but from being frustrated and I piss off. I used to be good friends with members that work at this agency. I know if the tables were turned, they would do the same things to advocate for their friends.

I welcome an investigation; we have not done anything wrong or without our friend’s permission. If I could say one more thing to this agency, please proceed as they see fit. I will do what I have to protect my family and myself.

Maybe I should not be writing this blog for they can use it against me. I wonder if they will use my pasts Facebook postings. Then they would see how other think too. If this happen to most people, they would stop advocating for others. Not I, I hate seeing injustice being served!!!!!

30 Days Would Be A Piece of Cake

I realize that times are tough for a lot of people, but I wonder how many people could live as a person with a disability. For example in MD the income from SSI is Just over $700, that has to pay for housing, utilities and food. For example how many people could buy a week worth of food on a budget of $60?

Back in my single day I would receive about $640. a month, I paid $110 for rent, $140 for food a month plus electric and phone/internet. Some how I always had a $100 to play with each month.

Most people would say go get a job, but do they know that it would only hurt a disabled person. If I, or another person would get another source of income that only defeat the objective. The more income one makes, service would decrease, or even be cut off. That would include insurance and housing cost would go up. Talk about a dog chancing his tail.

An Invitation of Disability Parking Abuse

Last Saturday Wifey and I went to McDonalds in New Town for lunch with her Cousin and new client. The disabled parking is a straight shot from the parking lot entrance; this is convant if you are disabled. But is an absolute invitation of abuse for the lazy and ignorant. To add more of a temptation there is a Red Box two-steps from the disabled parking.

During our 30 minutes lunch at least 15 people pulled into the disable parking to use Red Box. Wifey went out two times to talk to people about using the parking space, we always hear its just two minutes. I always wanted to ask if I could kiss them for 2 minutes. This is Wifey’s pet peeve; I say call the police before we get mad. You never know what people would do now.

The third time Wifey went out, she took me. When I get piss, I do act like an animal just compare it to the incredible hulk. While we were waiting for the police I was yelling at all. I used my chair to block one person from driving off, one lady called us vigilantes.

Everyone says they want to stay a talk to the police too, but they always take off. That only tells me, they do not have any belief in their own words. While talking with the police officer another lady comes up and identified her self as a social worker. She said my wifey let me roll in the street as a human blockade. If she was really doing her job, I would think she would have came out sooner to see why I was so upset?

I was told I could go to jail for my action, it would be one hell of a cause to be locked up for. Plus it would be another thing to check off my bucket list.

Disabled people want their rights, but not the responsibilities that come with it.

It is very interesting that I have heard this phrase twice this month and never before. Two different people said this on two different occasions. The first person, is a service coordinator that is deaf her self. The second person is a great disabilities advocate, which has C.P. him self.

I hope they are not trying to tell me that I have been slacking on my King Gimp duties. I would like to think that I have been holding up on my end of the deal. Even thou at times my crown becomes thorny, I do want can to obtain the answers. When I don’t I seek them out, or point in right direction to find the right wizard.

A visit to a 4th Grade class.

As always everything went wonderful at McDonogh yesterday. When talking with 4th graders, I think it’s important to let them know. It’s ok to be yourself and life is More interesting when you have friends that a bit different from their self.
After spending an hour with the students we like to see how well they can understand me. I left them with this sentence: Everyone can contribute to life. %90 of the students had no problem putting that together.

Time Always Wins

For a few months now Dena and I have saying we need to get a new dishwasher before this one goes up. Well the alarm just went off, Monday I notice a bubble starting on the ceiling in the location of the dishwasher in the kitchen. I email Tom from Peli Construction because he said now his mission to make the house last. That really makes me emotional, he was sent here for a bathroom job and now is my go to guy. Tom had one of his guys stop by a few days later and confirm my thoughts. The sink is dry underneath, so it must be the dishwasher. We caught in time, because it might only dripping for now and could get worse. Wifey might be happy now that my head does look around like a bird.

Being that Dena and I travel often, we get to stay in hotels that are mostly pleasant experiences. Lately we have been running into accessible bathrooms that small like septic tanks. I wonder if this is because hotels try to retrofit existing bathroom and do not use the right pluming?

Most of the time we just light a candle, because we don’t want to be ungrateful guess. In addition, we do not want to inbairuos our host. It is just a tricky spot to be in, could be a health risk. Do others find this to be true?

if a disable person runs out of food 2 days before shopping, do you think staff is doing their job?

we have a friend who is developemently disabled, he was in rose wood until 6 years ago. he lives independently, but gets 15 hours of "support" each week. there are many reasons why we think his staff is no good.

For one example he keeps running out of food. at his circle meetings we do bring this up. they always say it is the person choice, so we can't do anything about.

tonight i got an email from our friend for the second week in a row that he has no food. last week i sent him pizza. nobody in his circle is doing anything to change this.

i know our friend is partly to blame, but his staff just says we are just here to do what he wants. we can't do anything that he doesn't want. we always look like the bad guys, for speaking up. I used to be good friends with the boss of this support service. I was "warned" if I kept making noise, she would report me for abusing my services.

Went up for my first shower since the project has been finished. I went in my studio to undress, what at most that takes 5 minutes. But Mr. neighbor must have not liked that, because I hear him banging. We exchanged banging on the floor 3, or 5 times. Shippensburg University Trip

Dena and I got off to an early start since the crew came to start the bathroom project. We had no reason to stop until we were 20 minutes away from the campus. Then we started to hit a community yard sale. This was really odd, since it was a Thursday. We drove around and stop at 5 houses and found some goodies. Then we started to see signs for the elephant museum, but the real treasure chest was right before it.

This property look like from American Picker and our camera was not charge, so no pictures on this trip. We spent about 40 minutes looking around this place.

We get to the hotel 4 hours later, have dinner with a group of professors and went to do the presentations. This was the first time so many departments got involve to bring me to campus. Sociology, Psychology, Education, and Art Departments we really do not see this on other campuses. Dena and I really must have done a superve job, because I am still getting hits on Facebook from students at SU.

The next day we went to visit a couple classes at the Elementary School on campus. The plan was to take some questions and I would paint with the kids. The student were asking such good questions that we ran out of time to paint. I did do a quick drawing for the class, so they could see how I work.

We ended up our visit with lunch with Alison, the Professor that organized this trip and soon a to be student. I think his name is Jeremy, he attends classes but working to become an official student. Jeremy’s goal is to become the first President with C.P. I think it is good to have this goal, but I am sure he will be more remember for the things he achieves on his journey.

Bring On The Next Engagement

The weekday after a speaking gig always seems to be the loneliest. Not only that are on a high of doing a good presentation, but also that we get to spend some quality time together. When we get home Dena goes off to work taking care of Missy J. while I go back to my studio, or emailing making connections for our next engagement. On the other hand most couples do get these opportunities to escape from everyday median life.

I was wondering if you could point us in a right direction. Our daughter Brooke is finishing her freshman year at college, going into deaf Studies. Brooke is looking for some ideas, or work to keep what she learn already fresh over the summer. I would say do an over night camp, but she already has her owner place, that would defeat the point. The deaf camps that Brooke has look into. She did not taken the classes yet to give her the skills they are looking for.
I told Brooke to call UCP to see if they still do the day camp. By summer Brooke will be 19, so would anyone have somebody, or group she could contact. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

When we moved into our new house I knew the neighbors would have issues when I started back with my art. I thought it would be over smells, not because of noise. Also to remind you we do live with Dena’s ex-husband Mike. Last summer Dena and I was in the carage and started to talk with our neighbor, it was like an introduction to Dan. I have C.P. and have a career as an artist, so I work at home.

This really started on Christmas Eve, mike goes away and we would were having company. Dena Started cleaning, her back was hurting, so I took over the laundry. Our laundry room is on the third floor; I went from the second and third floors many times that night, but was done by 11 p.m. The next morning he stops one of our guests and says we kept him up all night going up and down the stairs until 2 a.m. also we are lucky he does not go to the home owner association about us. Then Mike gets home and the guy next door tells him what happened. This is making me feel like we are back in high school and telling on us.

In my studio there must be a floor Joyce loose, because when I crawl around the floor squeaks. During the time I was making work for my new show I never worked past 8 at night. Although I did reasonable hours, he complained many times to Mike about the noise. He never speaks to me about this issue, because I will tell him different. They do have a new baby, but never expressed that the noise was disturbing their baby just him.

I did get a chance to say that I was helping my wife with the laundry on Christmas Eve and he just blew that off. When we had the big snow, he came to help dig out our car. I wanted to explode, because I knew he was being fake. Dena thought he was apologizing, but he did not disappoint. A few days later I was doing art and he comes knocking again about the noise. He is basically telling me what I can do in my own home, if not being discriminating.

The same neighbors now have their house up for sale. He has express concern to Mike about noise from the bathroom project, during his open houses. Most people looking at homes like to know that other owners maintain the surrounding places. You can tell this guy is uptight and does not like others to challenge him. For the people that know me, maybe you should send your condolences his way.

It’s a Good Thing (Ok friend, here is my latest in search of…)

Today the people came from Accessible Housing Services, to review the project before they start funded by Baltimore Co. Office of Community Conservation. To there enjoyment they did not see any last minute surprises that would delay the projects. Unlike when we put in the front-loading washer and dryer.
So they will be starting the bathroom project on April 6th and hope it would take 4 days at the most 5. The boss is hoping to have the stairlift install at the same time. It so happens that we are going out of town at that time so when we get home, a new accessible shower will be waiting.
A week after we put in the remote caroge door opener my electric chair completely blew up. Then something happened to the caroge door so it unhook from the opener. Before the guys left today they were able to fix that. Plus I got an appointment at KKI to do an evaluation for a new power chair.

Yesterday I was asked by my trust lawyers to accompany them to the Maryland Senate to testify for MD Bill 888. After searching for the interpretation to everyday language, the purpose of passing this bill is to stop other state agencies from putting additional limitations on what the trust can be used for as time goes on. In reality this added limitations end up being in violation of federal laws that already exist.

In my opinion, it is highly unfair to write new restrictions for a process that is already complex from the start. In 2001 when we setup my special needs trust I understood that I could not use it for everyday life cost cover by SSI. Over the years I have notice that I had to justify more and more the things that I would like to do with my trust.

Over the years I notice, I used to pay a friend to repair something around my home, but now before work can start I have to obtain 3 estimates before work can start. If the cost is more then a certain amount I have to use a license contractor. Even now when I buy electronics, I have to get 3 prices for the items.

This just makes it more confusing and frustrating for the trustee and the recipient. I get to the point where it is not worth using my trust, if I hear no to many times. I would rather go without.

If no rules are being broken and no harm is being done, it’s not right to add limitations, or stipulations that would cause this to take place.

The Other Living Skills

I know in Maryland there has been an overwhelming task to get the disabled out of institutions. I see why this is a very big ordeal from finding affordable housing to support staff to make independent living possible. I know in my case it took months to get all of this line up and people still looked at my mom and I as is we were crazy for even thinking of this.

When I was in my third semester at Towson U., I took my Intro. Psych class. I did a paper on the topic of Social R****, at the time it was a hot topic, because a lot of the disabled were being mainstream into school. The problem was that they did not know how to interact with the rest of the students in a social setting that are there peers, since many came from protective environments at school and the home.

I am wondering if any studies have been following the disabled that have been in institution and now live in the community? I have been on my own since I was 18 and even had to learn proper hygiene, keeping clean living space, and knowing whom to trust. Where as a person that was institutionalized had no opportunity to develop these skills.

Mrs. G. my assistant at Parkville said it best. Even if I wanted to keep a condom in my wallet, I could not. Because she would know it was in there. Trust is the best skill the disabled community can fine tune and uses.  

This is just one of the many issues that need to be address in the disability community, but is over looked because of time and funding.

Another Super Bowl Sunday spent in the studio finishing art for a new show. Last time I missed the Janet Jackson nipple situation.

So frustrated I have never been this late finishing art for a show. It just sucks; I like making art without being under pressure. It not only but stress on me, but also the people that help me witch I do not think is far. I just hope we can stretch 6 pieces in one day, because 2 days later they have to go on the wall.

When People Live on Mars

On Saturday Dena and I took a drive to Potomac Park, so Miss. Julia could visit with some family. During this time Dena and I went for a cup of coffee. On our way back, I said these are the types of places that the disable should be live in.

As Dena said it is a community within and community. Everything is in walking distance, if someone wanted to get out of the house they can walk around the corner and get a bite to eat, a little shopping. They also had a market, if something ran out at home the person could just walk, or wheel to pick the item up.

The reality is that these types of community are way too expensive and if units were built to be accessible. Most likely that would drive the price up even more. Just maybe it would become affordable when people move to Mars.

So my 38th B-day began with some fun adventure, but some history first. I share my B-day with Grant and Poe. I lend towards Poe more, because of the artistry and the dark since of humor. For 50 some years a fan has been leaving three roses and a half-empty bottle of cognac, until last year.

I have known about this since I was 16, I always wanted to spend the night not to expose the person, but for my own interest. I wanted to spend the night in the offices’ of the Baltimore Producers of King Gimp. Since it sits kitty corner to the church and Poe’s grave, which never came about.

I think 3 or 4 years ago Dena and I met some friends at a bar and each couple drew an hour time slot to watch the grave the following year. I think most people forgot about it and when we started the car, our check engine light went on. So we decided not to go.

This year we started talking about going again, but what if nobody goes since no Poe toaster came last year. Dena post on my Facebook to meet on the 19th at Westminster Hall for a shot of cognac towards Poe and me. Dena comes home early on Tuesday to go watch the grave with a bottle in hand. Pointing out the days mix up busted her bubble. So after saying we should still go, even if none of our friends, nor none of the Poe faithful may not show up we still went.

We got there around 9:30 set up our table and chair, candles and took a shot. While we were sitting there we saw a white stretch limo hummer go around the block. Dena said someone must have been having a bachelorette party. By midnight there was around 30 people hanging out talking, trading toaster stories. I found out that there are two Poe Graves. They moved his body to the one with his wife that is on the front corner. The only real Baltimoree there was a photographer. We are from Owings Mills, another guy from Bowie and the rest were from out of state, or country.

At midnight the New York Gals says happy B-day Dan. Dena starts singing: happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to my husband that puts up with my shit, happy birthday to you… As Dena is saying you, we see a man in a hat walking by and goes around back to the old grave for a while. We see him walk back out and up the block. Few minutes later we see the limo again and the guy is in it, so needless to say it was not the real Poe Toaster. About 40 minutes later we see another figure come and leave, this one look more like a woman. I am sorry to say the Poe Toaster was a no show again this year.

It started to rain and Dena and I started to cough our heads off. We left around 1:15 and missed the last 2 figures that visit the grave, even if the Poe Toaster has ended. I think people should still gather each year; it was so much fun meeting the people that Poe attracts with his writing and is a great tribute to the Man.

I wonder if one-day cell phones plans would offer more text messages compare to minutes. It would be helpful for the disabled, I know I send more text then I do talk. Not only because my phone is not working at the moment, but in geranial its easier. Now I see commercial for things as life link that are available for people that have low income, or disabled. I don't think that would do much good for me, since I am more of a text person.

Art Blog, Perfect Studio Day

Last Tuesday Dena and I both got up early, she had to deliver some jewelry and I wanted to do some art. I just knew it was going to be a good art day when I put on my studio close and Dena started to make coffee.
I keep thinking of the scene from Pollock where his “wife” handed him the coffee as he goes out off the house and changes his shoes when in the barn. Dena and I used to do the same routine when I was in grad school, but I had a longer walk.
I worked for 6 hours, so I could finish the piece that was just waiting for me. I took my phone with me, in case I wanted to text. The only thing I didn’t have was music, the iPod was dead.
After working I cleaned up and change into some sweats to relax the rest of the night.

So I had a meeting on Friday at Gougher College in Baltimore. They have a new art gallery for local artist. It is more through their community out reach program. I will be the first artist to exhibit there in February, being a true artist I said I would do 10 new pieces by the hang date.  

Now my ass needs to get motivated, I have been thinking of issuing Dena a Chile challenge, since she knows what happened in the studio after we get back from Chile. Plus our coffee pot broke!

I also plan to keep an artist blog to show what really go goes into putting a show together. As I said before it is not just the work that I put on the walls.

Advise For Future Teachers

This question came from a professor that just showed King Gimp to their class. Do you have any suggestions for my students as they go out into their own classrooms, especially in the area of communicating with families? Or any other suggestions in teaching children with special needs?

Being a teacher is not much unlike being an artist, they both are fields that do not offer monetary wealth. The riches come from the rewards that come from how others benefits from your passions.
No matter how long you are in this field, I encourage you to always be a student. I have been disabled since birth, an artist since 16 and I still learn about new services and tools to help me through life.
Always be challenged to work as a team with piers, parents, and students that will bring success in your field to always grow with knowledge.

FEB Disability Employment and Awareness Training Conference/ Iowa National Rehabilitation Institute Conference

It was another double header week, on Wednesday we spoke at the FEB Disability Employment and Awareness Training Conference and the next day we flew to Iowa for the Iowa National Rehabilitation Institute Conference. The first engagement was straightforward, just go do my thing and give people a lot to think about. As we pull in the parking lot Dena was amazed to see how they reserved a space for us.

The audience was made of federal workers and Veterans; after I did my speech I was given a challenge coin. I was told that this coin should be with me at all times, because any officer could ask to see it. If I could not produce my coin, I would need to do 50 push-ups. I am of course shooting myself in the toe by putting this out there.

Another attendee so happened to work with Paul Perrooka years ago and I knew Paul from the school bus and other circles. After the gentleman heard my address, he felt bad that he did not give Paul more opportunities in life, or to express himself. My response was now he has a new approach for his current and future clients.

The next day Dena and I wear off to Iowa for the National Rehabilitation Institute Conference. Due to a schedule conflict, we could not arrive until the second day. It really work to our advantage, before we went to the hotel we stopped at Wal—mart. I am sure the students that picked us up from the airport, loved seeing Dena walk to the car with beer. We got to the hotel just in time for lunch and some awards that the association gives out.

When I am asked to give the keynote address, at the last minute I always hope that my topic is portinate to the conference? That is what I liked about speaking on the last day of this conference. It must of really helped, since one attendee already ask me to come back to Iowa to present at a different conference.

I always say, I am more then just going to speak. Dena and I like to be social and that night started with some board games and a Celtic band, they played Danny boy by request. Personal Care Providers on Colleges Campus

I have received an email from a public school teacher in MD. They have a student graduating next spring, he gets one on one help in school for academics and personal support the whole day. The student has been to DORS for a vocational evaluation, they suggest he goes to a community college. The student likes that idea and will start next fall. The problem is that while the student is on campus how can obtain personal care providers? I know colleges only have to provide academic support. Should DORS provide this for him, I know they do that in rare situation on the job site. The teacher also contacted DDA, they said services cannot obtain until he is 21. Has anyone been in the same predicament, or have any ideas of resources of funding? Any ideas would be welcome.

It just so happens that last week Dena and I went to a state's Rehabilitation association conference. I took to ask someone about this situation, this is the reply:

They should work with DORS to see if they would be able to provide the supports. If they are a client of DORS and their Individualized Plan for Employment supports education then they should be able to work with them to find the supports. Their counselors should talk through all of this with them. Just tell them they need to ask all the questions and advocate for what they want. The teacher may be able to get a release to talk with the counselor at DORS to talk about the services and supports the individual received while in K-12.

The STEP Program is a program for someone no longer in the school system and is between 18 and 20,wants to work and is DD eligible through DDA. Their focus is on jobs. It is a small program which leads me to believe it might be relatively new. I think the focus might be for students who fall into a black hole when they leave school at 18 and are not eligible for GTYI funding until 21.

What a tiresome, but wonderful weekend we had. On Saturday we attended the second annual I Love Me workshop at the League that was sponsored by the Ellene “Brit” Christiansen Memorial Fund. http://britmemorial.com/ This event helps women build self esteem though art and other workshops on body image. Being one of the only men there I sat in the corner, looking at my beautiful wife as she help. Once again I could not stop thinking what a luck man I am to have Dena as my partner in this crazy life.

We were asked to show King Gimp for their movie night. This was the most emotional viewing of King Gimp ever, because every one could relate to my story from the schooling to relationships.

FINALLY! Telling Gravity Where To Go

All of my life I wanted to do stuff that defies gravity, as jumping off our clubhouse roof, for a couple seconds of freedom. Also life risking sports as hang gliding, or parachuting. I guest it has been a way to give my body a break from the fight of gravity, or the ultimate lack of control that everyone feels when doing these sports.
I finally got to go on a zip line when we were in Tenn. It took us three tries to set it up, but was worth the wait. The first time we went to Wahoo Zip line http://www.wahoozip.com/ we were too late for that run. Went back the first thing in the morning and they did not have enough staff. So we set up to go later that day. Have you ever seen the harness that one needs to put on. It is a full body harness, so when you are on the line it holds you like a baby sling. That was the only thing I was worry about, could I lean back wards and turn up side down but I could not.
As we pulled up to the first tower, they said I could not do all the lines because of access to the towers. I am sure other people would be mad since they paid full price. Not me, because the staff has to work twice as hard carrying my ass up and down the towers, Dena and I were driven from tower to tower in a bob cat cart and I still got to go on the best line of the course. Even if I only went on one line, it would have been worth the experience.
It was not scare getting hooked in and I was really relaxed. You would think my body would be super wired, but it was nice and calm. When I was on the line my body just felt like jello, taking the shape of the harness and flowing into the wind. I really did not keep any memories of my body fighting. I was just there enjoying the ride.
The staff was great the hole time, when we got back to the office they all signed a T-shirt for me. That day was to put the human back into everyone’s soul.

I went to work with Dena and at the end of her shift, she had to run a quick arien. I was waiting for her to get back in the lobby, at max she was gone for 20 minutes. The building staff started to get nervous. I started to get closer to the stairs to tell them, Dena would be back. They started to get all freaky that, I was going to fall down the stairs. As soon as I heard this I backed away from the stairs.

You would think they could make the connection since I moved when they expressed their concerns. The doorman said he had to stay with me, as if I needed a baby sitter. I was getting mad so I tried to remove myself from the situation, because this is Dena’s place of work. So I went back up stairs to her friend’s apartment and sat in the hall until Dena returned and the doorman followed me.

I was getting upset; Dena has worked in this building for 5 years. So they knew who I am and I am sure they have heard about me none stop.

Dena still had to unload the car and go up five floors, so that takes time. I am sitting out front waiting for Dena unloading around back. The next thing I see is a police car pull up and sure enough it was about me. They said it was over concern that I was cold, since it was a chilly night. At least this time the police talk to me and saw that I was all right.

This was so ridiculous, when I do need help, people will act like they cannot see me. When it becomes a question of responsibility, or effect their pockets they want me gone.

What are Low Intensity Support Services (LISS)?
Low Intensity Support Services (LISS) - formerly known as Rolling Access- are support services established under Maryland Health-General Article ñ7-717. The program is designed to enable a family to provide for the needs of a child or an adult with developmental disabilities living in the home or to support an adult with developmental disabilities living in the community. LISS Services are flexible to meet the needs of individuals or families.

Is LISS the same across the State?

Yes. The process for accessing LISS funding is the same in every cotmty in Maryland.

How is the program funded?

The Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) funds this program with State only funding.

Who administers the LISS program?
The DDA contracts with five DDA licensed Family and Individual Support Service providers to administer the program. LISS providers, their contact information, and the county they provide services for is listed at the bottom.

Who can apply for LISS?

Maryland residents who have a developmental disability or their family can apply.

Does every person with a developmental disability get help?

No, because there is a limited amount of funding available.

Is there an application?

The program uses a request form to gather the necessary infomation about the person and the services they are seeking. Individuals must complete a Medical Assistance application unless the service is for a minor.

Do I have to provide any other information?

People applying will need proof that they are a resident of Maryland and have a developmental disability.

Do I have to provide information about my income?

The infomation is optional and does not impact eligibility or service decisions. The data collected allows DDA to report to Legislators how these funds benefit people with disabilities and their families.

Assistive Technology Matching Grants
The Association of Blind Citizens has established the Assistive Technology Fund. The Assistive Technology Fund (ATF) will provide funds to cover 50%of the retail price of adaptive devices or software. The ABC board of directors believes that this program will allow blind and visually impaired individuals to access to technology products that will have a significant impact on improving employment opportunities, increase the level of independence and enhance their overall quality of life. The products covered by this program must retail for a minimum of $200 with a maximum retail price of $6,000. Persons eligible to apply for assistance must have a family income of less than $50,000 and cash assets of less than $20,000. Applications will be reviewed by the Assistive Technology Committee (ATC) and recommendations will be submitted for board approval. If applicants are selected to receive a technology grant, applicants will be asked to provide documents such as tax returns, bank statements and any other documents that the ABC board or its designee would deem necessary to assess financial need for the grant. Applicants must be legally blind and a resident of the United States to qualify for this program. Applications must be submitted by June 30th, September 30th and December 31st for each grant period (three per year). Applicants will be notified if their request for a grant is approved. Disabled Children’s Relief Fund (DCRF)
DCRF focuses special attention on helping children throughout the U.S. that do not have adequate health insurance, especially the physically challenged. In some cases, DCRF may be the last resort. DCRF grant applications may be used for modest awards for assistive devices, rehabilitative services, arts and humanities projects, or for efforts to bolster compliance with existing laws for the benefit of children with disabilities. Applications may be submitted by families (parent or guardian) for an individual child, or by a non-profit organization for a small group of children. Included may be enclosed caption converters for television, tactile units, FM units (into which a hearing aid is plugged for amplification), computers to assist deaf children in communicating, as well as other technical devices may be prescribed. Jill Fox Memorial Fund: The Associated Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore
Jill Fox is a last resort grant, which grants funds for extraordinary needs of individuals who cannot otherwise obtain the necessary funds to meet these expenses. Their average grant is $400. A referral is required. All grant requests must be made on behalf of individuals by health care professionals, hospitals, or community-based social workers. MDA-ALS, Friedreich's Ataxia, Oculo-pharyngeal Muscular Disorder Communications Fund
MDA is helping to pay for communications technology for people who are primarily affected with ALS, Friedreich's ataxia, and oculo-pharyngeal muscular disorder and over 30 other neuromuscular disorders which cause muscle weakness and extends to the tongue and muscles involved in speech. MDA will allow up to $2,000 for the one-time purchase of an augmentative communication device. Purchase may be covered by Medicare or Medicaid but MDA will assist with the costs not covered. M.O.R.G.A.N. Project, Inc. – Quality-of-Life (QOL) Grant Program
QOL grants provide families with a wide variety of supports related to their medically fragile child with lifetime physical special needs. Applications will be accepted only for children under the age of 18. The grant does not pay medical bills, insurance premiums or out of pocket expenses, partial funding, nor provide funds for therapy, schooling or emergency assistance. Examples of qualifying requests would be uncovered DME-type items (such as an adaptive shower chair or an adaptive car seat), or travel expenses to attend a medical conference or support group meeting (such as airfare, hotel room, meals, etc.) in order to network with other families in the same situation. Currently this cap is set at a maximum of $1,000 per recipient, and subject to available funds. The average grants approved are between $250 and $500 per recipient. Multiple Sclerosis Foundation: Brighter Tomorrow Grant Program
The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of those diagnosed with MS. The Brighter Tomorrow Grant is an award of up to $1,000 to provide goods or services that will help improve the quality of life of someone with MS. In past years, the program has provided items for improved daily life such as appliances, personal items, car repairs, and home modification. Education and improved health and well-being were also encouraged through the presentation of exercise equipment and classes, hobby supplies, and financial assistance for educational purposes. Recipients desiring greater independence have received wheelchairs, ramps, and other assistive technology equipment. The MS Society provides partial grants to individuals with multiple sclerosis for assistive technology and durable medical equipment. A prescription is needed. Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)
MDA provides grant money to individuals with muscular dystrophy or one of 42 other neuromuscular disorders.
Eligible individuals can receive up to $200 is available for occupational therapy evaluations. Additionally, individuals can receive a one-time payment, every five years that is up to $2,000 of individual’s cost for augmentative communication devices, wheelchairs, leg braces, etc. Up to $500 per year is available for individual’s costs for wheelchair repairs and modifications. Muscular Dystrophy Family Foundation (MDFF)
MDFF is a fund of last resort. All other available funding must be exhausted before or used in conjunction with MDFF. Applicants must have one of 43 neuromuscular diseases or dystrophies covered under the MDFF program. Grants are provided for: purchase and repairs of equipment, respiratory devices, camperships, accessibility and vehicle modifications. If item is paid for by more than 50%, the item is considered property of MDFF and must be returned when no longer needed. Insurance deductibles do not qualify. Maximum amount for ramp grants is $5,000 (only temporary ramps are allowed for rental properties). Maximum for vehicle modifications is $4,000. Maximum for home modifications is $5,000. National Transplant Assistance Fund & Catastrophic Injury Program (NTAF)
NTAF talks with patients to determine whether or not fundraising is feasible given their unique circumstances. NTAF can help tailor a plan to meet both ambitious and modest fundraising goals, and can work with fundraising groups both large and small -- even if the committee comprises only the patient and a few family members or friends. NTAF will help patients and their volunteers develop everything from tribute sheets with a personal and persuasive story, to online donation materials, flyers, press coverage and other materials. Once patients read through the material NTAF provides and decide to fundraise with our organization, patients begin planning individually-tailored fund-raising campaigns with their NTAF patient services coordinators. Patients complete an application which includes questions concerning financial need. This application is reviewed by a transplant or catastrophic injury medical professional who adds relevant insurance information. Funds raised come to NTAF where they are held in Regional Restricted Funds in honor of the patient, for the region where the patient lives, together with other funds raised in that region. Once the completed application demonstrating financial need has been approved, a patient may submit a request for assistance (Fund Request Form) with appropriate proof of expense. TPA Scholarship for Deaf and Near Deaf

The Travelers Protective Association of America established the TPA Scholarship Trust for the Deaf and Near Deaf in 1975 to provide financial aid to children and adults who suffer deafness or hearing impairment and who need assistance in obtaining mechanical devices, medical or specialized treatment or specialized education as well as speech classes, note takers, interpreters, etc. and in other areas of need that are directly related to hearing impairment. Completed application must be returned to the Trust by March 1st each year. Trustees review all applications on file in April, notify recipients in May and scholarship checks are mailed after August 1st.

Travis Roy Foundation
Provides individual grant funds to modify vans and to purchase wheelchairs, computers, ramps, shower chairs, and other adaptive equipment to help paraplegics and quadriplegics live their lives. Applications are accepted year-round and are considered at quarterly Trustee meetings. Grants typically range from $4,000 to $7,500; there is no minimum award. Assistance is awarded to paraplegics or quadriplegics paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury (Please Note: paralysis must be due to a spinal cord injury; paralysis due to other causes, such as MS or spina bifida, is not eligible). Applicants must demonstrate financial need and may be required to provide documentation. There is no age requirement. Applicants must reside in the United States. United Healthcare Children’s Foundation
To be eligible, families must reside in the United States and be covered by a commercial health insurance plan; Medicare and Medicaid do not qualify. The child must be 16 years old or younger. Generally, awards will be granted to individuals in families whose adjusted gross income per individual does not exceed $20,000. The Foundation provides financial assistance toward the family's share of the cost of medical services. These grants, up to $5,000, can help families pay for the costs associated with therapies such as speech, physical and psychotherapy sessions; for medical equipment such as wheelchairs, braces, hearing aids and eye glasses; and for orthodontia and dental treatments. The amount awarded to an individual within a 12-month period is limited to either $5,000 or 10% of 85% of the fund balance, whichever amount is less. Gimp Is trible and Strong!

I often get asked what is the correct terminology when referring to one’s disability. I question to myself if I am the right person to offer my opinion. Don’t forget I am the guy that introduced him self as king gimp to millions of people around the world. At first the producer really did not know what to think of the name. They asked if I really want people on the street to call me gimp, sure why not.

Then my mom did not like the name, because it referred to being homosexual. I asked around in my many circles of friends and none of them have heard of this. Maybe in some under ground fetish culture, like in Pulp Fiction gimp does label some one’s sexuality. But ten years later I still have not heard gimp used in that way.

Then there is the opposite end of the spectrum, in the age of political correctness people demanded not to call a disability an illness, decease, or condition. I guest, they wanted a disability by its prober name, so should I get upset when people say that I have M.S. and not C.P. No Dena and I just take the time to explain the difference between the two.

According to the lawyer on T.V., C.P./Cerebral Palsy is a very expensive mistake! Yes, life with a disability is expensive, but not a mistake. It is a challenge to make life more interesting. I think if from the start the family and the disable person look at this as a mistake. They are sure to fail in life for not accepting the challenge and live life to the fullest.

When I was about 14 I would go to camp and I saw a shirt that had X over dis in the word disability. To this day I still cannot figure that out, because it was like cutting off a part of who I am. I think of my disability, it help makes me the person that I am and would not have it any other way.

An OT Class Project

I often receive emails from students in every field of study and professionals from various fields. I do not mind repeating my advice, I figured, if I keep blogs with general ideas they can email me questions that are more in depth. This week a class of OT students saw the film and now are doing a project on me.

“We just have a few questions for you. Have you ever participated in occupational therapy? If so, from your perspective, what advice can you give us regarding the relationship between the therapist and client? For example, what qualities do you like to see or admire about OT? What are things you remember most from your interaction with OT, whether positive or negative?”

I regularly received OT until the age of 13. Most of it was benefit, I learn how to use the head stick for typing, art and other things. I also work on using the straw and I still use these skills today. The other day I was eating a yogurt and Dena said how cute it was that I stuck my tongue out when she put the spoon in my mouth. Yeah but if you were an OT, you be going nuts from the tongue thrust.

I think, as kids get older they should become more of the team and have some input. I might have been shown a new solution to a problem. When I got home I may use the same tools, but find a new way to use that tool. I was about 22 before I could but my head stick on by myself. I just got home with a device that held the head stick up for me. It broke the first time I used it. I figured out to wedge it between my desk and keyboard so I could just slide my head into it.

I only had one thing that I really hated in OT. When I was about 7, they tried me taking myself to the bathroom. At that time jeans still had snaps, so I could undo that. They put a ring on my zipper; even at that age I was aware how other people see me. Why make myself more odd with rings on my pants zippers. Now I just buy my pants a bit loose, I can just slip them up and down.

Lets Ride

It was always the same story, every time we wanted to go horse riding. The stable always would say we only take disabled people around the ring not on trails. This was not the case at Five Oaks Riding Stables. They were even going let me ride by myself, but I could not manage. Although the stable manager did see that I did get the right horse that could handle me.

When it was decided that I need a second rider, we changed horses. The hole time my horse Mrs. Penny love to walk on the edge of the trail. My second did not try to correct the horse, he trust the horse and just added to the experience. At one point of the trail he pointed out where he was thrown by a horse. This was not something Dena wanted to hear.

Although our guides were relaxed they did of plans if something happened. The lead guide said he only had to throw his rains on the ground and his horse will stand still incase he had to jump off to help us. Just for kicks he demonstrated it and the horse did not move.

The best sight of the whole ride was after we got off of the horses. Dena was telling them about the commercial I did for Cingular and one of the pulled out his cell phone to look it up. The next thing we see are 4-6 cowboys.

You may want to take some time off from working on your art and go do something fun and adventurous that will recharge you. Another thing would be going out and take photos that could trigger a fresh idea in your work.

Other things that might bring freshness to your art is sitting in your studio and just thinking about the work.

Men can Fake it Too

This is a first a man gets a year in jail for faking seizures to get out of paying food bills. I faked seizures before, not to get out of doing stuff but to give people a better show.

I used to go to Camp Green Top and we would go into the town for the Fourth of July parade. The whole camp would take up a half of a block, so this was a new experience for their town. We were getting tired of being watch, word got around about faking a seizure. Being the spirit that I am, I took it upon myself to follow through. That was also the parade that the counselors tried to give me away to Miss Thurmont when she drove by.

Family Vacation 2010 (advetures)

We started on our journey at 12 a.m. on Monday morning, for most part we drove straight through. We did stop for about an hour for everyone to rest, or take a break from the car. Being that there were three different drivers everyone had there own techniques, even thou momma was not thrilled over that.
Our check in time was at 3 and we made perfect timing, because we arrived 10 minutes before the time. We rent our cabin from Cobbly Nob Rentals Villa, Gatlinburg, TN.
So Dena and I went in the office and took care of business. After riding around and driving up hills that Dena hated we found “our place”, as we are checking it out Brooke realized that it was not the cabin she picked. It’s back to the office to get things worked out. Good thing I took the reserve papers.
We did get the wrong cabin; it just so happens that when we made our reservations, there was a computer problem on the company’s end so the cabin was doubled booked. Being the problem was on their end and Dena handle it in a friendly why. The manager Doug gave us two options.

1. Upgrade the cabin at the same rate, but it would not be more accessible.
2. Keep the cabin and just get charged for the cleaning fees.
Dena and I choose the second option, with the money back; we could just have more fun and did we!!!!!! I know I said was going to draw at the cabin, but ended up not taking my supplies. This was for the best, besides the hot tub was not easy to get to.

The first day was not very exciting; Dena and I drove around town trying to find a bank to cash a check at. We finally decide to open an account at a bank on Dolly Pardon HWY. By the time we got back to the cabin it was kind of late, so we had dinner and watch movies.

Day Two:
Got up a bit later then planned, so Dena started to make calls and lined up activities for the week. Since we got a late start, we went rafting. We went to Big Creek Expeditions, http://www.bigcreekexpeditions.com/ as the van pulled up to river Dena and I realized we did the same river before. I sat right up front on my bum so I can use my legs to lock in. we went on rappets form class 1 to almost class 5. For those who have been rafting before, yes we did some surfing. Dena said it looked like I was drinking from a water fountain.

Day Three:
All of the locals kept telling us it was a must to go visit Cade’s Cove and see the wild life. Such as elk, bears, foxes so that meant an early morning. We got to the cove and there were nice sights of open fields and mountains that I enjoyed myself. The pay off came at the end of the drive, when a baby bear was 4 feet from the road and Dena got out for a picture of it.

Next we went to a “lazy” river ride, or that was what my honey bunny called it. It should have been a hint, when the three companies names were, Cowboy Tubing, The River Rat, and Raiging River. The second should have been climbing down to the river. All four of us started out fine, but I was the only one that didn’t fall off my tube. On the other hand I was the most scratch up from the fight to stay on my ride. The ride usually takes 1.5 hours, some how we took 4 maybe that was the lazy part.

Half way through I said I would rather be rafting class 5 then tubing. In rafting the idea is to stay in the raft and people are looking out for each other. I knew tubing was not for me, but if I did not go then everybody would back out.

Day Four:
Another kind of lazy start, but it’s vacation! The four of us went horse back riding at Five Oaks Riding stables http://fiveoaksridingstables.com/ I started out solo on the horse, but could not do it going on a trail. I was just sitting on the horse drench in my sweat. So I had a second rider go with me, he also gave me his bandanna.

There was a question if I could do an hour ride, but I did! My body might have been fighting to stay on the horse, but at the same time it became one with the horse. We had two real cowboys go with us, on their off time they even get bang up in the rodeo. The one riding with me said, “that is just a sacrifice you make doing what you love”. I could relate to that in my own work, people say one day my body will just give out on me from the abuse I put it through.

Day Five:
Our last full day and maybe our greatest adventure yet. Brooke, Matt, and I went for a zipline ride at Wahoo Zipline http://www.wahoozip.com/. It was exciting and relaxing at the same time, amazing enough my body was still during the time in the air maybe it was in shock. Every time I left the plate form it was like what the hell.

Since they guys had to carry me around and up each tower, I could not do the whole course. The head guide decided to refund our money.

The whole week we never heard, he can’t go or let me talk to our manager first. I stop going to the MD state fair since the first thing I would have to do is get permission to get onto the rides. In fact people were over generous from making any accommodation to our needs to giving us free stuff to mark each adventure.

Family Man

We are taking a family vacation this summer. Of course being the artistic, hippy type we need to be different. That just makes it hard to find a place that fit all of our needs, to be a family and have accessibility.
We want to go stay at a cabin in the smoky mountains. It is not a problem finding a cabin that would fit all of us, but non that are accessible. The cabins that are accessible would only have one bedroom.
Now that I look it up again, I found accessible cabins with multi-bed room in the same price range. At least I will know for next time.

Do You Remember These?

You are never too old to try new things. This weekend I went to my first 3D movie at the age of 37. I never had interest in going to a 3D movie. I knew using those paper glasses would be more frustrating then worth. This weekend we had the Greco kids and they wanted to see Despicable Me. It was very enjoyable because now they use real glasses frames.

This also reminds me when I first met my friend Mike in college. He asked me if I like Star Wars?

I replied I never got into it.

Mike thought I physically could not get in the movies.

My Plea For A Father Day Do Over

Last week I started to have a boil; it did not hurt just a lot of pressure. The redness and hardness went across the top of my thigh. But there was a head.
On Saturday Dena and Brooke were playing DR.
Brooke says it is a spider bite like I had. Go to Patient first, they will num it and then work on it.
Later that day Dena tried to pop it. Mostly blood was coming out.
So Sunday (Father’s Day) we went Patient First, they Dr. said it might be an ingrown hair and even though there is a head to it. It is not ready to pop and the hardness is from blood gathering. To prove this he stuck a needle in it and only got blood. But the Dr. did not do this quickly. So I am on antibiotics until Wednesday and maybe then it will be ready to pop.
Afterwards we went on our way and had a picnic at Loch Raven, as we arrived we get into a heated conversation that really had no beginning, end or could really get upset at each other for.
Later when got home Brooke and Dena called dad, this only compounded her fears over my boil. Since dad felt that he had to share his boil stories.
After all of this I did get a happy ending…

P.S.
As we were leaving the place, Dena said she could not handle the size of the needle. I’M THE ONE WHO FLIPPING FELT IT!!!!!

Evolving Too Fast?

The other day Dena and I went to a local hotel for breakfast, just because. It was very crowded and the only seat we could find was right in the middle of the place. Some of you may know how hard it is to get around dinning room tables that are full. So Dena goes up to the buffet.
The next thing I know is here comes a guy on a segway, I’m thinking no way. Then I notice a pony stick attach to the handlebars. So I started thinking, maybe he is disabled. The only table open is in the back of the dinning area. As the guy is making his way to table the staff ask if he could park the segway.
By this time Dena is back at our table and Dena could tell I’m getting itchy and they are in our direct sight. I see a disable sign under the seat of the segway. Dena does not, so I am the only one realize that this like a wheel chair to him.
I have more questions then answers, is there a new trend for using segways for the disabled? This is the second I have seen being use as a wheel chair. If so, should the disability sign be more visible, but does that but a label on the person? How can people be more educated with new trends for the disable?
The same goes when people find out I can use text on a cell phone.

World of Possibilities Expo

This was the third year that we did the WOP Expo. It turns into mostly a way to reconnect with friends, although I display my art work and look to make networks for speaking engagements.
This year we took Fizz Jewelry; it was over whelming, we sold over a hundred pair of earrings. We were also joined by the Ellene “Brit” Christiansen Memorial http://britmemorial.com/; this is a fund that helps makes art accessible for the disabled.
The expo is always a nice change of paste, because I can just hang and still share some of my stories.

Off To Mohawk Valley Community College

Even if our destination is just an hour away, we should plan to take double the time to arrive there. Sometime this happens if we know there is a long drive a head of us. As I looked up the direction for MVCC, something seemed to be familiar about this route and sure enough it was. Mohawk Valley is about 30 minutes from Hamilton College; at the end of route 12 we made a left instead of a right.
To people in the area, route 12 is slow and boarding but to us it is a treasure chest. We stop every mile, or two in order to check something out, or at Wal-Mart to get an oil change and dinner. Then a gas stop that turned into a 45-minute scratch off stop. Dena and I really enjoy our time together and see other ways of living.
The next day was the presentation, but before that was a reception to recognize students and professor for out standing achievement for the school year. This is when I met Christina and her wonderful dog. Maybe she will help me get one of my own, not that I need a better one then Camden.
During the screening of the film we had the opportunity to hang in the green room with our host Mike, this was more entertaining. Also we stumbled on the drum that used to begin and end the speaking portion. We are always more interested in meeting the people that hang around after the engagement, most of the time that is when we get the real interesting questions.

Drawing Surface

I think I found a good way to draw that is good for my medium and my body. I paint sitting on a thick foam mat the size of a queen bed; it is too soft to draw on when I use my hands. I tried using a drawing board, but the size is limited and my knees just end up on the board. So that defeats the purpose of the mat. Also it is a little too hard to work with the medium.
Next I just put the canvas on the floor directly. This solved most of my problem, but ultimately it is too hard on my knees. The other day I went for a walk and someone was moving and had a for give away pile. I took a gym mat, it work better but still not enough padding for my knees. Today I tried the gym mat on top of the big one and its golden. My body is happy and I have a good surface to draw on. Talk about the princess and pea…

KSU Engagement Follow-up

Last night I received this surprise from Adam Oglesbee Hi Dan, I know it’s been a while, but I thought I would let you know some good news. This evening, Kennesaw State hosted the Registered Student Organization awards banquet to recognize the achievements some of the 200 organizations have made on campus. ABLE was up for "Outstanding Global Awareness’ Activity." We were up a...against other organizations who had very good activities. Dan, you should know that you took home the award for that honor. I thought I would tell you. Dick Stafford and I will send you a copy of the award. Take care buddy and thank you for enlighten our campus with your presence.
I believe we got this award together, because Adam’s determination to seek me out.

Visit to McDonogh School

For the past few years I have had a standing invitation to go chat with the 4th grade at the McDonogh School. It started with an idea of Doctor Whiteford and her husband who works at the school. As part of Mr. Whiteford’s lesson plan the students read a book about a boy that can’t talk. To relate more to this story the student cannot talk for a day and have to use picture books as a way to communicate.
At the end of this lesson Dena and I go talk to the class that allows me to explain how life is with a disability. The students always of questions that most adults do not even ask. I believe if we are going to change societies’ out look upon disabilities, it starts with the youth.

Mentor Group at North Harford Middle Schools

A few weeks ago I was ask by my friend Gail’s mother to come and visit a mentor group that she works with. This turned out to be not your typical engagement; Phyllis and I kept trading emails about how we should proceed. Phyllis planned to show them the film before hand, but what should we do when I arrived. We came up with the idea of doing some painting together; I did this once before with a troop of Brownies and was quite successful.
I can say the same for this time as well, everyone was so focus on their work no one was talking. After we finished the pieces I let the kids give me interpretations’ of my piece, which were very insightful.

Is there a perfect roll/wall in shower?

Giving the fact that Dena and I do a lot of traveling for work and pleasure. We see many types of “accessible” bathrooms; some are tub with a seat and grab bar. For this I’m taking the full shower.
The two things that most hotel showers have in commend:

1. Water gets all over the floor and makes it slippery for everyone. Even if it is a shower unit.
2. If the whole bathroom/shower is tiled, the same tile is use all around. This makes everything slippery and makes it most frustrating.
This weekend we stayed at a red roof and they had the best idea for the drain. It was the whole length of the shower. The drain is made by zurn I could not find a picture of it. The floor still got a little wet, I also wonder if water remains in the drain between uses?
When my grand mom was in the hospice, I saw the non-slip flooring for bathroom. I really found it useful, it was in one piece in the whole bathroom.
I do not like wall-mounted seats; I have broken a few and most places but them too high. I do like the multi grab bars and multi showerheads.

I keep thinking why it took us so long to find each other in this wonderful way. Maybe we both had to pay our dues, is that is so god is so switched. On the other it could make us appreciate one another better.
I just keep hoping that I have what takes to keep full filling your life so you will want to keep me around. It seem like you have seen a lot of the world and have a huge desire for physical pleasure. So I hope you never feel a void due to me account.
In January when I started back to school, I realize that I have all now. Not only a successful career life, but also personally. If we keep arguing over the stuff that we do, damn we have great, since I think we argue over stupid.
I like that you make yourself at home in my place, it does not scare me at all. Or that we are coming back from Ireland with commitment. I love being with you, even at dinner just sharing our day and lives to together.

Looking back at our short time together, we have experienced more then most couples do in a life time. From see over half of this country and going international together. Our love life could be a segment on HBO’s real sex. We still argue over stupid stuff and sometime you do it on purpose to get my blood heated. I hope I did not use up all of my good shit last week. It is hard to think that we have been together for six months. It has seemed to go by so fast from all of the laughter and the good times we have shared. Of course it cannot always be so good, maybe times like these are just a test to see it we really have what it takes to make a real go at this thing. As long as we keep talking things out like we have, I image we have a good shot.
We probably should be making a special evening of this anniversary, but we both know that timing is not right, but as long as we keep thinking about each other it will be a special day. There are many days that I just stop to think what a lucky man I am to have you in my life, I get all emotional.
Even through we will not be spending the night together, I will be laying in my bed smell your sent. While I think about your soft, warm skin on my body while we fall to sleep. I just want to say I’m deeply in love with you and thank you for the past 6 months and here’s to a 100 more 6 months.

Here I sit ready to start the last leg of my education, like I am really thrilled about it. My thrill in life is you and brook. They say summers are full of fun, they past of sucked for us, but that was out of our control. I just keep the little treasures. Like the other day when you and I went to shorty’s, too bad we did not have a blanket to lie down. The other night when you cooking and brook and I were messing with her computer. I was like wow I can do this. There were times when I wanted to go crash at my studio, but you would want to do the something.

I really miss going out to have fun; my friend mike has been wanting to meet you from the start. I know this is only temporary, it still sucks sometimes. But the most important thing is that will are here to take care of each other, how many couple can say that!!!!

Everyone thinks the start of a love affair is all good, but not when you put two hard heads together that are used to doing things their own way. We both brought out luggage and we had to sort it out. Even though people see it hard of us being a family, we have made it work. I always see that you and Brooke still your time.
You doubted your being with me, because of my lime light. Where I doubted myself as a parent roll, I still like to refer to myself as the other parent and not as stepfather. It just seems more like us, because we work as a team and non-conformists. It works for us.

What a crazy year we have with all of the turmoil we have had from the people the say they loved us. It would seem that the odds we against us and we would not last. Instead it has made our bound stronger and shows us that we are met to be together.

We have shared our good and bad times and we have fought though them together. Which only showed that we shared the same way life. That is what most couples have, they only see what they can do for each other, where as we see what one another can contribute to make life better for the other and as a couple.

Paul and shavon had the baby on Monday, if you couldn’t figure out the message. He was 8 lb.; see what you have look forward to. His shoulder was dislocated during birth, nut everything else it fine.

I fix your know iPod so we will have it for our trip. I call Jody, he came over last night to go out, and I was like lets eat here since you fix all this food. By the time we finished dinner it was 8 and he still wanted to go to damn Annapolis. I was like why. We stayed Jody had 2 bears and was wiped out so he went home. He said this time I had a good idea.

I have been putting this off for almost a year, I do not know why? As many of you fellow gimps know, Medicare makes you choose between a manual, and a power chair. They do not see the social need for having both. But anyway I have had the same manual chair for say 17 to 20 years. When the sling seat would tear, I would take it to my local shoe repair store and have it sown back together. I did this about 3 times, until I went to present to a class of Put’s students. The professor puts my chair on the table and just rips it apart. I knew my chair was a piece of junk. The whole frame was bent from years of abuse and trips around the world. The class fitted me with a hard seat, not attached to the chair.
A few months later comes the excitement of the wedding, picking up people from airport and stuff. On one trip we retuned home and no seat is to be found. We left it in the airport garage, so it’s gone. Lucky we had an antique chair to use for the wedding.
The day after the wedding, my new father in-law was outside trying to rig a seat for my manual chair. It worked for 4 days. We were in Spring Field, IL. and the seat was a goner. So I said lets go to a hard ware store. So we found a Loews, their first ideal was to send us to a metal smith. We did not have that kind of $$$, or time.
My plan was to get a piece of plywood on hold it on with L shape brackets. Thank god we meant the right sale persons, they became a NASCAR pit crew. They cut the wood and screwed everything together.
Several months later I received a new, old chair with the help of Asha. Through her and class mates connections with the Delray Center. It might not be perfect, but this chair is better then what I was using.

My Fan VS Wild Submition

I should be on Man Vs Wild, because the everyday task is a challenge for me to do, due to me having Cerebral Palsy. I do not let my disability get in the way of anything. I have been skiing for 17 years and I spent a month touring Europe.
My taste for adventure started has a young child, when I jumped off our clubhouse, just to feel the freedom from gravity. This would bring a new adventure to my life, as well as to Bare’s and your show.

To most people adoptive skiing would be pretty extreme, but that seemed safe compare to my stop in Prague. First of all, I almost did not make it off the train and my friend all already got off. Lucky some other travelers help me off, before the train continued on its way. There were many times in Prague, when I had to climb stairs on my hands and butt. We were glad to end our stay in Prague, because it was hard on the body and my wheel chair kept falling apart from the bumpy cobble stone road. But was worth the visit.

KSU Engagement

All my life I have meant people that the connection is just there. For the third time Dick Stanford asked me to come to GA, this time to present at KSU. Since we were so close to FL. We just had to take the trip with Michael to WDW. Then Dena decided to bring her friend, Miss Julia that she takes care of. Given this as the case; we had to bring some help with us. So Pamela and T.C. were brought on board for this adventure. The drive the accessible van with 2 power chairs and all of the luggage.
We were lucky that Dick let us stay in his condo, a few blocks from Underground Atlanta. This condo was so beautiful and Olympians used it when the City hosted the Olympics. We really over stayed our visit, because the place was so comfortable.
Our engagement was at KSU it was so well done. They scheduled the reception before I spoke. It so happened to be in an area that hung a student art show from high schools from across that state. I was very impressed by the work that I saw. I also like the fact that they served virgin apple martinis instead the usual lemon aid.
I want to thank Adam for his hard work for making this event possible. He was the one who talk to Dick about having me come to the school. Adam also had research different resource of funding to sponsor my visit.
So who is that guy on top of me on the floor? That would be Carlton; he had me come speak at EU a year or two ago. We just hit it off, after that gig. We ended up going to a club until 3 a.m. then danced in the parking lot of the hotel. We had not seen each other since then, I just have no control even when the spot light is on me. From the Oscars to seeing old friends, when the king is happy everyone knows it.
Most of our trips are about meeting new people and learning how the film impacted them. This time it was about reconnecting with good friends and enjoying great times.

We just talked to the hotel manager in NC, he did apologized and saw that the stuff did make mistake, but had the right to be concern. The situation did get out of control and should have known we were quests when Dena walked in with our bags and dinner.

The hotel has already scheduled sensitivity training, but not with us, we offered our services. They of the option of using the everyday training service, or get an experience that people will remember for a lifetime.

Team Work Does Pay Visit To UNCC

Last week we had to travel in between storms for a speaking gig at UNCC. It snowed the night before we left on Wednesday, so there was no telling if we would get the early start as we wanted. Dena and I were on the road by 9 and did make any stops until NC.
About 2 hours into our trip, we saw a Volvo station wagon towing a plywood wonder breadbox. As we past him the back was full of puppets, so one could figure he was a clown. We honked our horn and gave him two thumbs up. The next thing we knew he putted on a clown nose. He could not keep up, so we went on our ways.
About 2 hours from our “hotel” we started to see signs for a big discount store and one sign is for cosmetics, so we decided to stop. I could tell Dena was disappointed with the selection, so we were back on our way. As we past one rest stop Dena sees the wonder bread wagon. To reach him we had to make a mile circle getting on and off at exits. Dena thinks what if he already got back on the road. He did not; he is a puppet master on his way to Martigra from Maine. We made his day catching him 4 hours later.
This engagement was a year in the making from the office of Student With Disability Service to their adviser committee. It sounds as is the student on the committee did most of the legwork. They did multiple fundraisers, even on the day of the presentation they were putting up signs to promote the presentation. They also set up the reception after ward and planned all of public relation before hand.
It just goes to show you what can be accomplished when people work together for a commond goal. I had one moment where one says I’m not the old, am I? The student that did the introduction said she watched King Gimp at the age of 10.
Dena and I what to stay another day to relax, but we had to race the storm him. In the pictures you can see what we had for breakfast. Ah the life of road worries.

Dena and I reached MD just as the snow started come down. We went to the market to get some food for the next few days. As we were checking out in was in front of Dena holding onto the cart with the food already bagged. Dena was busy paying and did notice.

The security guard at the market made the gesture to offer me help getting out side. I shook my head to say no, they turned my head to point to Dena. Without saying one word the guard knew whom I was with and that I was ok.

This happened 48 hours after the hotel, now who looks like the idiots?

I am going to share this story to express my frustration and use this as a learning experience. Trust me, I will see this through the King Gimp way!

I went to University of North Carolina-Charlotte for a keynote speaking engagement. We left early and arrived about 8 hours later. I have not been to the bathroom since we left. Dena dropped me off at the lobby and asked the door man where was the restroom was located. I went into the hotel independently and managed everything on my own. Dena then went to get dinner in the community. I sat in the lobby for few minutes to get my bearings. I moved twice to get out of the way because the lobby was crowded.

The doorman did ask me if he could show me to the bathroom?

I said no.

So I went to the bathroom, when I left the mens room the doorman past me and said, “there you are”!

I replied, “yeah”. This correspondence shows that communication was not a barrier between customer and the Bellman, how is it that this couldn’t be an example to ALL the staff.

An hour later Dena returns and doesn’t look happy.
This is the conversation that took place the moment she drove up to the hotel property.

Security-Are you with the man in the wheelchair?
Dena-you mean Danny? It is strange that you ask me in that term, is everything all right?

Security-What is his story?
Dena-His story…what do you mean?

Security-I mean, what is his disability?
Dena-Danny has Cerebral Palsy-why are you asking me this?

Security-Why doesn’t he have a caretaker with him?
Dena-Do you have a caretaker?

Security-No, but we are not talking about me.
Dena-Why do you think that Danny needs a caretaker? He is fiercely independent and the idea that you feel he needs one is passing judgment. Let me tell you something, Danny is probably more intelligent that you and I put together.

Security-Do you see where we are coming from here?
Dena-No!

Security-It looks as if someone just dropped him off and left him, we didn’t know if anyone was coming back and it looked like one of those circumstances that we didn’t know what to do with him.
Dena-I have been gone an hour to get dinner for us how are you to turn this around, you are OFFENDING me, I mean us. I need to speak to your Manager.

Security-It is my job to protect and see things through. We TRIED to communicate. We asked him if he was here with anyone, will anyone be back for him and if he had a care provider and he couldn’t answer to anything.

Security-You are lucky, we were minutes from having him “taken away”.
Dena-Stop speaking with me immediately I am deeply offended and will not speak with you at all.

We entered the lobby and had finished this conversation front and center. The lead Manager in charge, the Security Guard, Dena and I along with 60 + guests that were observing this dual.

They (Manager and Security Guard) said they were concerned. Dena asked were you so concerned that asked Danny if he were o.k. or if he needed anything or needed to call 911. This is what concerned people do, inquire the problem. Dena then asked me, “did anyone approach you to ask you any of these questions?” I said, “NO”! The whole hour no one spoke to me. We challenged their timeline and caught them in a lie. The Security Guard had told Dena I was incapable of corresponding to the questions that they had asked.

I made the statement I am here because the University invited me to be their Keynote Speaker, this event inspires others how to break these typical stereotypes. This can go away if you both come and participate. They both laughed it off.

They called the police; Dena and I were making our way out. The security was pushing people out of my way, as if I would run them over. I kept yelling I could do it myself, by this time I just wanted to explode. But it would just play into their hands. Dena and I are now out side, standing. Four police cars arrive all having attitudes because they felt it really wasn’t a “real problem”. One Officer said, “that you have no legal rights and it’s only a civil matter”. The Manager spoke up and said, “if the events got louder then we can press charges” the Police Officer agreed. Clearly, we couldn’t understand how a hotel had more legal backing over abrupt conversation and would have more protection then discrimination with the disabled. We were told to leave because you are still on ‘hotel property’. When we drove off they remained laughing, as if we were jokes. Let’s see if they are laughing in court.

I do not blame UNCC for any of this, in fact they already pulled out all of the college accounts with this hotel. They also offered to set me up with a local legal advocate, which I am doing. In addition, I will be working with my network of advocates and am weighing out all my options. I want freedom of speech and awareness to bring everyone in the mind set of 2010.

last weeks visit to AU was my last engagement for this year. in 08 I had 14 gigs and this year I end up with 15. this has been excellent considering how everyone has been seeing budget cuts. I knew it was only a matter of a before I and the disability world were more impacted by the economies.

I could understand the lack of interest for planning a speaker to come presenting at schools and organizations. To me it is more alarming how programs are being cut that help the disabled community. I just learned the rolling access fund by DDA will gone by the end of the year. This program could purchase equipment not covered by Medicare, insurance, and impossible to pay on a limited income.

Also MCIL is closing up within 3 weeks, this has been a great resource and advocate for the disable in Maryland. My fears are that the cuts will go deeper and our quality of life will roll backwards.

Pets luxturey or therapy?

When Dena and I moved, we could not bring our cat, boo boo with us. Since Mike and Brook already had a dog, boo boo is a one has pet and does not like most people. She is a small cat with a big attitude. So it would hard to find her a new home.
Boo boo and Michael seems to have a good connection, so we offer him be boo boo new dad. His first reaction was joy and no doubt. Later Michael changed his mind, not because he did not want her, but rather that he would have to pay to have a pet in his apartment.
When I moved into my apartment, I would have to pay $300.00 even if I just had one gold fish. In case the apart suffered any damages. Why does the elder and disabled need to pay a free to keep pets in apartment? I would hope landlords would see the therapeutic value.
These two demographics live on a limited income. By the time monthly bills are paid, there goes 80 to 90 % of their money. By having pets a person can be save from depression and even elongate one’s life.

Trip To AZ SILC and NAU

It was one of those trips that we went to work as soon as our feet/wheels hit the ground, so we had a 5 a.m. ride to BWI. I always say to myself time to make the donuts.

Our first engagement was at the AZ SILC in Phoenix, from the outside it was a modern new building mostly glass. What surprises it had waiting on the inside. Like on any other trip I did not go to the bathroom until we arrive. Yes my friends, it was gimp heaven, all stalls were accessible, clean and slick. There was even a family room in side with the 10-gimp stalls.
You know how some buildings only have one, maybe two automatic doors? The empowerment center had them at every door; I have been to our mother ship.

This is what happens when people can build from scratch and do not have to retro fit. The real reason that this place is called the empowerment center is that it house 5 different organizations.

Our next gig was at NAU, in Flagstaff. We did a presentation for disability awareness month, typical deal. Screen the documentary and then do Q&A. but the faculty had a great idea, they past out note cards. So the viewers could right down their questions, so nobody knew whom it is was. This system worked so well that we went 20 minutes past the lowed time. In fact I already suggested this to the next places that I am appearing.

Our last full day in AZ we had no commitments until that afternoon. Flagstaff is only 80 miles from the Grand Canyon, so we had to go. This is where the D&D adventure begins. We had no car, so we tried to rent one. Nobody would rent to us since we were from out of town. To remind you it was 9:20 and we had to be somewhere by 2:30.

We went to the hotel desk to see if there were any shuttles from town to the park, no! There was the taxi, but big bucks. It turns out the service had a taxi going to the park anyway and because we worked with their schedule the rate was cut in half going, but full price on the return trip. The next thing was he dropped us off at the park, not in side. So before we took another cab into the park we went to the Imax show. We spent about 20 minute at the rim itself, but it was worth the magical view as you can see!!!! It took magic to see mother earth at her best.

We are moving to a house that is rent to own, but it multiple level a nightmare for us gimps. It has a lot pretention, as you can from my face book page I am auctioning a piece of art to start the accommodations myself. As a for, example a keyless entry to the front day and garage door opener so I can go work on art when I want.

I know I can obtain some help to modify a few things by the state of Maryland through Baltimore Co. Office of Community Conservation, I’m sure there will be limits. Does anyone know any organizations that help fund home accommodations, or purchase medical equipment to modify homes? My first communication device was purchase by the Lions club. Any ideas, or suggestions would appreciate.

Is Society Ready For Our Relationship?

Hell no!

Dena and I have been together for 5 year and every time we turn around it is another obstacle. If it is fear of my service getting cut, it is finding affordable accessible house. Why would our Gov. make Dena be our sole provider for everything, think of how much stress that would but on us? It is just setting to fail before we could start to enjoy each other in our lives.

I alone use to live in HUD subsidized housing because of my limited income. It was accessible because of a walk/roll in shower. I made it even more accessible by installing a keyless lock, a push button thermostat, and remote ceiling fan/light. If they knew that we live together there we would have been kicked out. We do not want a hand out, but our Gov. should

look at the whole picture and just guidelines and income. Three years ago we moved into our current place own by Bozzuto. First it take us 7 months for them to put a walk way from the parking lot to tour porch. The only way to get it done was to get producer Susan Hadary of King Gimp involved, they put the walkway in the next week.

Our next challenge was the bathroom, it has a tub instead of a walk/roll in shower. A year after we moved here the complex had to replace the tub, because of rusty drain. Dena and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity for management to but a shower in. they would only install it if we splint the cost. At the time we could not afford it, so we got another freaking tub. Being who I am, I started to go through my network and finally got connected to Baltimore Co. Office of Community Conservation. Hal that work come out for the site visit and wanted to do the project the next day. 3 months later after all of the application were done and Hal got approved on his end. The big wigs at Bozzuto said go a head with the project, but only if we restore the bathroom when we move, there is not a demand for accessible units. Can someone please explain this, on top of this our rent has gone up 4 times within the last 7 months.

Dena and I are in the process of looking for a new accessible, affordable place.

People looked at me like I was insane for getting a cell phone. Of course I cannot really use it for the phone, but is great for texting. It open a new way of communication for me. Has it done the same for others with disabilities?

I am please to say I got married on April 1st 09, we had been dating for 5 years. Now I would like to share some video and pictures with you all from this hysterical event.

After all of our guest went home, my wonderful wife and I started a working honeymoon. We packed up our WV bug, that we gave Brooke. We spent 28 fabulous days in this car go from ILL, MO, OK, TX, and TENN. And back home again without having a fight.

When we were in ILL. And MO. That was that business part of our
trip. I spoke at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois and for the Physical
Therapy Association Anniversary Spring Conference, in MO. This is how life should be, being able spend our life together in business and relaxation.

You may ask why I want to
do more speaking engagement, of course it is nice to make an income from what
you enjoy doing. More importantly I want to let people know anyone can reach
the goals if they find their drive.

Every Great Man Needs A Great Woman

This was one of our stops on our Honeymoon...

Dena and I stopped for 2 or 3 days in Springfield ILL, the home town of President Lincoln. We always try to find cheap hotels, that are night too much of a scratch n sniff. Cheap hotels means they are not accessible, but we always make due.

We stayed at a place called the Lincoln Ledge. We get up the next day to play tourist, but before we do. We needed to go find a place to fix the seat of my wheelchair. That is a story for a future blog. After fixing my chair, we make our way to the Lincoln house a museum. The house was more accessible then I thought, they give disabled people private tours and take them in the block off areas of the house. Although I could not go up stairs I touched the same railing that the Lincoln's use to climb the stairs. Also I saw pictures of the up stairs. After the tour the staff took time to talk with us and that is part of the video you see.

From we went to the museum and the Lincoln Memorial. The most interesting thing I found at the memorial is that the lock of the back gate is stuffed with pennies.

Why I Enjoy Speaking Engagements

I like to share my life story not to show people how successful I am even through I may be disable. But rather to let everyone know they can find the same success them I have, just need to discover what makes them thrive for life.

I also like to travel and meet now people and places. Some times I meet people how are better of then me as for the equipment and/or the services they receive. Then on the other had I see something that makes me happy how I am and what I have in my life.

Trip to Chile 06

The producers I were asked to go for our first international film fest to Chile for Teleton. Teleton is list like the Easter Seals, or the Shriner’s of America since they have own schools and hospitals.
First I was afraid that would not be able to join Bill, one of the producers for this trip. Since I already had another engagement booked the same time. In additional, Susan and Bill wanted Dena to go with us, we were approaching our second anniversary of dating. Susan the other producer was working on another project and could not join us.
It was decided that Bill would get to Chile first, since I had a commitment. After a few days of going back and forth Dena agree to join me on this once in a lifetime adventure.
Did you know that 1/3 of Chile’s population is disabled On top of that none of sidewalks do not have curve cuts, so the people in manual chairs just pull wheelies up and down the curve. Most public place is accessible at. It would be hard to tell from this video, put the video is from a tour of one school.
After three days of interviews, presenting, and tours Bill came down to the hotel lobby with his bags packed to go on his marry way around the country. Dena was confused as hell. She knows we had four more days before we went home I said just go pack our bags. The van was there to take us to one more dinner with our Teleton friends.& After many hours of good fun, food and vino Dena and I start out on an adventure for two.
We stop a food market and I said get food for 3 days. Unknowing to Dena I set up a cabin for 3 days to celebrate our two years of dating. So after two hours of riding in the dark, we finally reach it. The cabin just had the basic kitchen and bathroom. So we spent with nothing but talking, cooking, and vino. Welllll it was our anniversary!!!
The day before we left, we went up to the main office to pay the bill. To our surprise it was already taken care of. A man that worked their offer to drive us back to our cabin. To remind you, this place was at least 2 hours from the city. It turns out that he saw the HBO film and when he was young he had a brain injury and was in a Teleton hospital. When he picked me up to put me in the van, he said he just touched and angle.

The next the van came to take us to the airport, as the van pulled away we both looked back and cry.

Why do people always think Dena is my mother, or sister? When people do find out that we are a couple. They do not see as equal partner, but Dena as the “care taker” and her life is so hard.
When we were leaving this engagement a gentlemen that was in the audience caught us outside. He said to Dena, I bet your life is so easy. “I see how you two each other”.
P.S.
This was the gig that almost stopped us from going to Chile. Luckily it was in D.C., so it was an easy drop off at the airport to catch our flight.

Marywood University 06

This was Dena’s and my first speaking engagement together, Dena was so nervous. She spent most of the time running back and forth to the bathroom. It might have the few beers we had before hand along with the nerves.
One of the things that could have kept us from dating not my disability, but my fame. Dena hates the spot light. I said she was with the wrong man, because I need a woman to stand at my side. So together we can work to make a change in the world!

Oakland Community College 06

I never mean to be boastful, but I beat out Bill Cosby for this gig. Yes I do public speaking to make an extra income. But at the same time I keep in mind the real purpose of doing this. Being involve in the disability community and educational system for most of my life. I know they have limited funds and when cuts are made, these budgets are first to get the ax.
It is an internal battle over the monetary gain VS. what is gain from actual gig? I know the gig wins out, I have spoken to rooms of 20 to 2000 people and I always it is a valued experience for all.

Pinkneyville Middle School 06

This was the second Dr. Stanford invited me back to one of the schools where he teaches. He is a college professor and a middle school teacher in Atlanta. I must have made a good impression the first time, we also became good friends.
I really enjoyed the format of the presentation the school set up for me. A week, or two before arrived the show the film King Gimp in each of the English classes. This way everyone had seen it ahead of me being there. When I got to the school that morning it was a big surprise to all of the kids. They broke the classes up so Dena and I could talk with smaller groups. I would say 3, or 4 classes at a time for 45 mins.
Because the film was shown in advance, we had more time to converts with the classes and had questions prepared. I was asked "what is my greatest accomplishment"? I look to my right and said she is sitting next to me. Dena replied did you here the questions. Everything else I have done was a solo success with the help of me circle. While a relationship can only be successful only by two people.
This time when Dr. Stanford asked to the school, the next night they putting on a play and asked to attend. We gladly did, I do not look at gigs just to do my thing and split. I hang out and talk to people, since they might be too shy to ask a question while I am on stage. When we go for out of town it be fill with activities with the group that hired me.
I think it is the experience of meeting new people and sharing ideas that benefits all of us.

Sorry to be a downer on this one, but I feel the Sekai’s story has to be told. I do not like to be thought as a role module. It did relief Sekai’s for an hour or two while we were together. It is best that I let his mother tell the story, sadly it end by Sekai taking his own life, because his young soul could not deal with his body as a prison.

What is the difference between valuable and valued?, I asked. I was not being sarcastic, or witty, as is a common form of communication in our family. My mother had caught an edit in the program for this very service, and I was suddenly intrigued by the meanings of these two words. We sat and pondered for a moment, and then she answered: “well, something can be valuable, but not valued.” Indeed. Point well taken. Synonyms for valuable include precious, expensive, costly, dear. Synonyms for valued include appreciated, esteemed, cherished, loved. Indeed. The use of the word was a typo of sorts on my part, but it gave me a point from which to begin this statement.
Sekai said more than once that he did not feel valued. Disturbed by his deep sadness, angst, anger, seeming refusal to even attempt to enjoy any goodness in life, I began yet another round of begging, pleading, questioning that often led me to answers I needed, but truly did not want. Don’t you remember what Sekai means? Yes, Mom, I know, full of laughter. What happened? Where is your laughter? When I was gone, my laughter wasn’t valued, so it went away. Well, Ms. So-and-so at school told me that you kept her laughing on the day she wasn’t feeling well, so I know that somebody appreciated your laughter, your jokes, your silliness. At school they appreciated it. At home, at my foster home, they didn’t laugh at my jokes. I would say funny things, and they didn’t laugh. My laughter wasn’t valued, so it went away.
He also said more than once that he did not feel important. When his class did a dance routine for the picnic following the awards ceremony, before the dance, he worried that people would laugh at him; after the dance, he was sullen because he did not get to do his solo dance. He said it made him feel that they thought he was not important. And this after he had fretted and practiced the jiggy to the left, jiggy to the right, up, down, now zigzag, stretching his arms as far as they would go, and working hard to stay with the rhythm regardless of where the spasticity might want to take his limbs.
The spasticity. The cerebral palsy. Do the doctors know about this? He asked when I gave him the name of the condition that he recognized in students at my friend’s class at UCP, but did not recognize in himself, having never been given an explanation of why his body was different. Do the doctors know about this? Can they cure it? Are they working on it? It isn’t fair. It isn’t right. Why aren’t they trying to fix it!? He had thought it was only the dislocated hip that was keeping him from walking, and apparently was not aware that there was something that caused the dislocation, though he knew that it could have been repaired. Actually, the dislocation could have been prevented had the hip been repaired before it pulled completely out of the socket. And the pulling out of the socket could have been prevented had he received the baclofen pump that had been recommended years before. Or the neurosurgery that he would have had at age four had he simply been allowed to stay home. He also attributed some of the not being able to walk, to even step anymore, or stand on both legs, or even sit straight, to the broken leg…for which we still do not have any reasonable explanation.
But there was a critical lack of reasonable explanations. And every time we went to another doctor’s appointment, we were both made painfully aware of the reality of just how badly wrong things had gone since he was snatched from his loving and caring family by the very helping professionals who were employed to make sure things did not continue to go wrong in his life. The appointments started with two orthopedists, both of whom commented that there was nothing that could be done about the hip now. The second one added that it should have been done five years ago. After that appointment, Sekai refused to urinate for about a day and a half, taking his pain and sadness and anger out on the body that he felt was the source of so much pain and sadness. The first orthopedist pulled back his gown, and let out a profane explanation, loudly questioning just what had been done to my son’s legs. In 35 years of working with kids with cerebral palsy, he said, he had never seen a leg length discrepancy so severe: a whopping 6 inches. He questioned why the scars were so long, and crooked, and why he still had osteotomy plates in ten years later, and how exactly a child who did not ambulate independently had snapped his femur clear through. And why it had not been properly set to allow it to heal straight, rather than at a downward angle. I believe he vomited that night. Or maybe again refused to urinate. Or refused to eat. Or maybe he lashed out, fighting me as I tried to put him to bed.
Fighting you? Yes, fighting me. He was so angry. But really he was hurt. Why didn’t you come back for me? I waited for you. I WAITED for you. And I was coming for you son, really, I was. I had to fight courts in Baltimore. I had to fight courts in DC. I had to fight the agency. You still fight the agency. Yes, and I will continue. For me? Of course for you. You would fight for me? Of course for you! What about Raymond? What about Raymond? He is still there. And there are other foster kids, kids like me. What about them? I want to help them. I want to tell my story, so we can help the others, too. I want to go on tv again and this time tell my story. Ok, but let’s get you better first.
The appointments went on and on, and so did the bad news. “Are you aware that he only has one testicle?” I only have one testicle!? Why do I only have one testicle!? More bad news. “The build up on his teeth has led to severe gum disease. This has happened over a long, long period of time. The gum disease is really bad. There may be concern about healing from any surgery, concern about the condition of his heart.” This, the day before the day. More bad news. Weeks previously, we saw his gastroenterologist to find out what was to be done with his new feeding tube—new because he had pulled out the gtube button to prevent being given feeds for extra nutrition. He had a fever, and we were both pretty sure he had an aspiration pneumonia. After all, just the night before, he had leaned back in bed on day four or five of his depressive episode-turned-vomiting-fit and vomited up into the air and then breathed it back in. I asked her what could be done to make him stop vomiting. “Nothing. Once they learn that the vomiting works, there is nothing that you can do. They either keep giving themselves pneumonias and die from a pneumonia, or they end up having to be trached, and then you’re looking at six months tops. Or they just choke.” Ok, let’s go back. How do you make him stop vomiting? “Is he sick, or is he doing it on purpose?” He’s seriously depressed. He’s doing it on purpose. He engages in self-injurious behaviors. He says the story ends with the boy going to heaven. “Then there’s nothing you can do, and you need to be prepared for that.”
Nothing I can do? But I have fought for him almost his entire life. His name is Sekai Ayinde. He can kick this depression. His laughter is in there somewhere. And we have been praying for him! Nothing I can do? What about the psychiatric programs, the therapy programs? So we called. And we waited in emergency rooms. And we called from ER hallways. Yes, he talks. A lot. No, he uses a wheelchair. So, you’ll take him, but you’re not sure if he’ll get anything out of it? And he might be upset?...oh, the others don’t talk? OK, um, how do you do groups then? Oh. They’re not processing groups. The program down the hall? Oh, yes, they said they won’t take him because he might be preyed upon. Ok. Thank you anyway. So, they said no. At least this program didn’t blame it on the wheelchair, or say they would not do activities of daily living. Let me ask you a question, psychiatric social worker in unnamed urban hospital. Where do the kids who have multiple disabilities, but average or greater intelligence go for treatment when they are depressed? Depressed to this degree, when they are really planning to not keep breathing? I mean, where do they go for treatment if they can’t take their own selves to the bathroom, can’t get their own food, but can talk and think and rationalize and have these deep, deep, deep trauma wounds and are so tired they just want to be done? You don’t know? Are they all dead? What I am supposed to do? Take him home and just pray he doesn’t die tonight?
Able to think and talk and rationalize. He was. But few believed it. And he knew this, and it hurt him terribly. Why do they think I am dumb? Why do they think I am not smart? I hate it when they talk to me like that. I don’t want people to keep thinking I am a loser. I want to be a contributing member of society. I want to be a valuable member of this household, of this family. If I had stayed home, if I had stayed with you, I’d be better. I would be able to read, right Mom? I would be able to walk, right Mom? I wouldn’t have missed so much. I should have been with you. I am sorry that I gave up. I didn’t think you were coming, so I tried to go on with it. I am sorry. I should have told them! Told who? The court. I should have gone to the court and told them to give me back to you, that you are my mother and you love me. That you never hurt me. That you want what is best for me. I should have told them. You were a baby. You were just four years old. But I should have told them. I feel bad about that sometimes…
And he felt bad about so much. He asked if the people at CFSA hated him. He asked if God hated him. He was constantly afraid that someone would be angry at him, or disappointed in him. He feared professional people coming because he feared they would take him away. He feared familiar people coming because he feared they would go away. He attempted to reenact trauma over and over and over again. He didn’t want to take a shower because she didn’t let him take a shower because she said she didn’t want his equipment getting in the way of her kids. She washed us in a bucket, Mom. She would put me in my highchair, and Raymond in his chair, and wash us in a bucket…no, not a wash bin like the one we have. A blue bucket…yes, a bucket, with a handle. He fought me he said because he had fought her. He refused to eat because he had not been given food, only gtube feeds: taken straight to his room where he would sit from the time he got home from school until time for bed. Yet he weighed 76 pounds. Nearly 5’4”, and 76 pounds. Within two months of being home, he was up to 86 pounds. Four months later, the scale hit 96, then settled at 94. And he stopped eating. And started vomiting again. Stop helping me. I am tired. I don’t want to get better. But son, you’re doing such a good job! My past. My past is coming! No son, it won’t go down like that again. The judge said. And too many people know. They’re watching now. It won’t go down like that again. No, the memories. The memories keep coming. And I get so _________...and I don’t know what to do. Try to hang on. Work your therapy. Let’s keep working on the medicines. You want to tell your story, remember. You want to help kids in foster care. You want to help kids with disabilities. I’m too afraid to go on tv. People will look at me. You go. You do it. You tell them. I’m tired. I want to go to heaven. I know you’re not ready for that to happen. Not the pleading look. Dude. Stop. I am not giving you permission to do this. I am not giving you permission to do this! Let’s not talk about it. Let’s…honey, please, ok? Just try? Tell them what happened to me. Tell them about the other kids. We can tell them together. Let’s just get you well, get you healthy again. Let’s get you adopted. Then we can tell everyone, together. I am tired….Tell them not to treat foster kids like this. Tell them not to take kids away from their mother’s who love them. Tell them not to treat kids bad just because they have a disability. It hurts their feelings.
And his feelings were so, so hurt. He wanted to be home. He wanted to be happy. He wanted to feel the love, to accept the love, to return the love. But at every turn, he was reminded of what he had missed. Did you have Thanksgiving last year? I should have been with you. I should have had Thanksgiving. I should have had Thanksgiving with you. And Nnenne. And Uncle Iff. And Aunt Joan and Uncle Steve and Nicci and Erik. Did you miss me last year?...This is my second Christmas. I am 15 years old, and this is my second Christmas…I should have grown up with my godsister…I should never have been a teenager with them. I should never have been a teenager in diapers in a highchair in a room not able to use my power chair at home. They took my liberty, the freedom to make my own decisions and have the kind of life that I want. They took that from me, when they took me from you.
And he just did not know what to do with that. And it tore at him so, and he tore at himself, as apparently he had for eleven years, since the day I was made to walk out of that hospital, and he was made to learn that mommies really aren’t all powerful and sometimes evil comes knocking even on a four year old’s door, and bad people sometimes do such harm, and sometimes even good people let bad people get away with doing something horrible…and little boys turned teenage boys who hurt that deeply for that long get very, very tired.
Sekai, honey, I do understand. You asked if I would be ok, and eventually, I will. But I miss you so so so much, and now I hurt. You asked if I would be angry at you. If I would be disappointed. And I have to be honest. After I was done being scared when I heard that sound, and then didn’t feel your heartbeat. After I was done pleading with God in between rescue breaths. After I was done standing in the rain watching through the ambulance windshield as they worked on you. After I was done trying not to think, hoping against all odds that the flatline-turned-erratic peaks had become a normal up-down behind that curtain. After I was done holding your body, and kissing your beautiful face, and holding your suddenly straight hands. For a moment or three, I was disappointed, and very angry. How could you not give me more time? Six months to undo eleven years? But then the games started up again. There was a call that your body was going to be moved to a warehouse. Then the agency was not exactly sure where your body was located. Then they compared their hurt to my hurt, but yet refused to do what needed to be done to lay you to a proper rest. And then I remembered your question, and I understood your point, that maybe no, they would never leave you alone. So, rest well in the arms of your savior. I will tell them. We will tell them. Remember:

Blue Ridge Independent Living Center, Inc. 20th Anniversary Celebration. 09

Dena and I always enjoy meeting and visiting people. At this luncheon we decided to sit at a back table with a couple of friends we just met. One of the goes by the name Garry, his story has become more commend now that society sees no one belongs in institutions. With the help of BRILC, Garry now lives a full filling life in his own apartment and a job as a security guard. As I say everyone is a contributor to society.
